Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to work as a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. her path to success. In New York she was hired to pose for photos in a crime magazine and drama, however no theater job opportunities came up. As a hat check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette in the morning, while at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
